What are ice dams on roofs caused by?

Ice dams are formed when heat from the inside of a home escapes into the attic and warms the roof decking during the winter. This heat, combined with heat from the sun, can melt snow on the roof. Melting snow on the upper roof and in the valleys then runs down toward the eaves as water. When it reaches the cold eaves and gutters it refreezes. The continual thaw and re-freeze process creates ice dams.
The result is water backing up under the roof shingles or behind fascia boards where it can soak through the roof decking or wall sheathing, causing damage to attics, ceilings and walls. Quinn's Construction is an expert on roofing installations and repairs and can remove the snow on your roof or unclog an ice dam.
Simply put: here are four things that might be the cause of an ice dam roof problem:
  • Installation
  • Insulation
  • Ventilation
  • Design
Removing the ice dam is the first step in relieving the roof leak problem you might be experiencing. The source of the problem needs to be found and the correct solution applied so that it won't happen again. Damage from ice dams and leaking roofs are not to be minimized. They can cause extensive damage to the inside of homes and repair may be extremely costly. A qualified, certified, licensed roofing contractor will be able to remove the ice dam, research the cause of the problem, offer recommendations, and implement the repair. Quinn's Construction is ready to help if you experience an ice dam problem during the upcoming winter months this season.  (978) 957-1200

Here's an interesting factoid about snow and its effect on your roof:

For every 10 foot by 10 foot section of roof with a foot of snow, you have an extra 2,000 lbs of weight. With an average roof of 1400 square feet, and only one foot of wet snow, you now have 28,000 lbs (14 ton) of weight.

The Scoop about Angie's List

Before I even contacted them, Angie’s List had Quinn’s Construction listed on their web site.  It seems that a customer we had done some masonry contracting for had written a recommendation on Angie's site.  Because the customer was an Angie’s List member, the recommendation held more weight and gave Quinn’s the chance to be on the wall of happiness.  At the time I was unaware of the growing popularity of Angie’s List, but I wanted to find out more about it because customers started calling because of the listing.

What I did find out is that Angie’s List awards businesses a rating based on their performance, as judged by their customers.  Out of thousands of service providers, approximately 5% of businesses on Angie’s List meet the eligibility requirements to be considered and even fewer actually receive the award. The Super Service Award honors service providers that have maintained a superior service rating on Angie's List throughout the past year.

Whether it's maintaining current clients or winning new business, an 'Angie's List Super Service Award' validates excellence as a top service provider, who ensures the highest level of customer satisfaction, and gives their clients and prospects the confidence they need to make an investment in their services.

Another distinction Angie’s List uses to honor its highest quality service providers is the Angie’s List Honor Roll.  With businesses rated on a scale of “A” to “F,” businesses in the top one percent level make the honor roll.

Quinn’s Construction is proud to be associated with a company like Angie’s List to help us keep track of customer comments; and generally being commended for the work we do as part of our normal way of doing business.  And, we are pleased to say that we have received the Super Service Award every year since 2010!

If you need Roofing services, please give a Super Service Award winner a call to experience a true professional who will deliver a job to your complete satisfaction – Quinn’s Construction:  978-957-1200 (or, E-mail Tom).
